CONECTANDO MUNDOS?
Conectando Mundos (CM) is a European Commission funded project that was implemented from 2006 to 2009. The edition of 2010 will be financed by Intermon Oxfam.
Over the past three years, the project has developed into a process of fruitful collaborations between the implementing partner organisations, between the Consortium and other NGOs, with schools and educational institutions, with formal and non-/informal educators and individuals who have Global Citizenship Education (GCE) at heart.
CM is an international programme about Development Education within the wider context of Global Citizenship Education, implemented by Ucodep (Italy), Cidac (Portugal), Intermón Oxfam (Spain) and Inizjamed.
It offers web-based, age-group adapted activities for students aged six to 17, resources and didactic materials on Global Citizenship Education, training and support for teachers and educators and links to a number of other NGOs active in DE and GCE. Moreover, Inizjamed is actively engaged in the advocacy for the implementation of GCE in the formal educational system with educational and political stakeholders and decision-makers at Maltese and European level; the former together with SKOP (The National Platform of Maltese NGDOs and its members), the latter in collaboration with its international project partners.
In its work, Inizjamed is supported by various professional pedagogues who are active in formal and non-/informal education, specifically by the Scientific Committee and a number of primary and secondary school teachers involved in the activities. Citizenship Education aims at helping children and youth learn how to become active, informed and responsible citizens who will make their own decisions according to democratic values, and therefore become valuable members of their community/ies.
The global perspective furnishes the students with a better understanding of today’s globalised world and of the responsibilities to be a glocal citizen. Embedding Development Education within the context of Global Citizenship Education has gained increasing support in the international educational discourse. Both concepts, to a great extent, deal with the same issues from a similar or even identical point of view. Participatory schools are being offered curriculum material, training, seminars, guest speakers for activities and individual support. Interactive resources on issues related to issues that effect both the global and the local dimension are available for children and young people of all ages. Moreover, teachers and students have the opportunity to link with other schools in Italy, Portugal and Spain, where our partners embark on the same project, and also with a large number of educational institutes from around the world.
Through this educational programme, children and young people develop the following key skills and values, core to the National Minimum Curriculum (NMC):
· Critical thinking
· Concern for the environment and promotion of sustainability
· Empathy with other members of their community/ies
· Understanding that actions have consequences
· Understanding that resource allocation and own economic choices might affect other individuals, communities and the environment.
The project has received very positive feedback from a great number of educators all over the world. In fact, the Consortium has decided to apply for another EC funded project to be able to continue this process of collaboration for GCE.
Moreover, in collaboration with teachers and educators interested in the subject, national and international networks for GCE are in the process of being established in Malta, Spain, Italy, Portugal adn Costa Rica.
